Abstract

This study was carried out to develop a distinguished curriculum of Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at the Red Cross Nursing College. The curricula from 42 nursing colleges were collected by mail or internet nevigation from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30 in 2001, and analyzed. To draw out an agreement among the researchers about the philosophy, objectives, and the contents of the courses, two seminars and numerous small group meetings were held.
The results of the study are as follows:
1. The conceptual framework of nursing curriculum which is embedded humanitarianism and philantrophy of Red Cross Spirit, is founded on two axis ; one involves in knowledge, nursing practice and attitudes; the other in person, family and community.
2. Its educational philosophy is based on nursing metaparadigm, such as human, health, environment, nursing, and the educational belief of Red Cross College of Nursing.
3. The educational goals are to foster nursing leaders in health management, safeguard from health hazard environment in society, and golbal nursing care. The educational objectives manifest more specific abilities for students to reach the goals.
4. The curriculum consists of 45 credit hours for liberal arts courses. 123 for major, and 20 for education.
5. During graduating year, students are required to select one of three tracks which are consisted of 5 credits respectively such as gerontological nursing, disaster nursing, and international nursing courses.
6. The ratio of liberal art courses to nursing majors is 20-30% versus 70-80%, and the professional courses within 40-50% are designed for clinical practice.
7. For graduation, students are to complete more than 36 credits during his/her freshman, 72 during sophomore, 108 during junior, and 140 credits during senior in its cummulative sum.
On the basis of the results, the researchers recommend that the nursing curriculum should be revised continuously with analysis of role expectation reflecting social needs at time.
